The Mekong forms the north eastern border of Burma for a distance of 237 kilometers. The Mekong basin in Burma is home to Shan, Lahu, Akha and Burmese ethnic groups. The Mekong subsistence people of Burma are some of the most impoverished in the region. Not only are they faced with the daily struggle for subsistence in a challenging natural environment but many are caught up in a bitter conflict with the Burmese military Junta. The Subsistence peoples of Burma are some of the most vulnerable in the region and more needs to be done in order to assist those whos survival resources are being compromised by the Mekong Mega dams. |
