‘The most fundamental of all human rights is the right to the basic subsistence resources needed for survival’

The Challenge: The Mekong mega dam cascade is one of the largest dam schemes ever conceived. Overwhelming scientific evidence suggests that the cascade will dramatically alter the rivers ecology and directly threaten the food security of millions of the world’s most vulnerable, river dependent subsistence peoples in the Nations of China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

In order to avoid a food security crisis, increased poverty and significant species loss within the Mekong basin it is essential that sufficient advance planning and resources are put towards sustain-ably addressing the wide ranging issues associated with the cascade particularly at the grass roots level. Urgent efforts are required from all relevant sectors to avoid a social and environmental catastrophe.

The Mekong Descent foundation strives to ensure that the negative impacts of the Mekong Cascade Dam Scheme are acknowledged and acted upon by all relevant sectors to ensure that Mekong subsistence peoples are not thrust into greater poverty as a result of the mega dams and that adequate steps are taken to limit the dams impacts on the regions ecology. By working together we can positively affect the future for the vulnerable Mekong subsistence peoples and their environments.
